DeKalb Regional Medical Center has a state-wide reputation for being a top-ranked Alabama hospital, so it came as no surprise when DRMC received its eight straight “A” grade from Hospital Safety Scores.

The hospital took home the grade recently from the Leapfrog Group, a group that compiles and reports one-of-a-kind data to ensure safety, quality and resources for the public and hands out distinctions of A, B, C, D and F letter grades bi-annually.

The Hospital Safety Score uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign the letter grade to more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide, two times a year.

To put into perspective how DRMC stacks up to the competition, the nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety and transparency in the U.S. health care system recognized DRMC as one of 823 hospitals to receive the exemplary “A.”

DeKalb Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Patrick Trammell said DRMC’s priority No. 1 is patient safety and the eight straight grades of “A” reflects those safety standards.

“Consistent recognition as a high performer on key safety metrics means our process is working and our care teams are keeping patients first.”

Leapfrog looks at things such as infections incurred while a patient stayed at the hospital such as MRSA, blood infections or UTIs; problems that occur during surgery such as objects left in a patient’s body, death from treatable complications or dangerous blood clots, and then the hospital’s overall practices to prevent these incidents from occurring.

“It’s something that we have to be focused on every day,” said Vicki Kay, chief quality officer for DeKalb Regional. “Everyone in this organization has to be focused on patient safety.”

Kay said the statistics used by Leapfrog are reported on a daily basis.

“We report them quarterly, but we monitor them daily,” Kay said. “We have processes to prevent infection and have been very successful with it. It remains our focus.”

“This recognition of an ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety is a testimonial of our team’s dedication to our patient’s safety,” Trammell said.
